SCIENCE CAFÉS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GDANSK

We would like to invite you to open meetings in the form of science cafes bringing the scientific activities of the University's employees closer to a wider audience.

Monday, 25 April 2022, at 6 p.m.

The lecture "What does it mean to live on ecological credit and how can we change this?" will be presented by Dr Barbara Pawlowska, Prof. UG from the Department of Transport Economics, Faculty of Economics, University of Gdansk

Abstract:

The global economy consumes far more resources than the Earth can reproduce or supply. Humanity already consumes 1.6 times more resources than the planet's regenerative capacity. This means that almost every country is taking on more and more environmental credit every year. Since the industrial revolution, the world has developed in a linear model based on the often predatory exploitation of resources and the production of ever more waste.

The ecological footprint determines our impact on the environment. Exactly how many hectares of land and oceans it takes to meet our needs and absorb the waste we produce. We must remember that the impact on the ecosystem depends on billions of our daily decisions. It's very important to make them consciously. Have you considered what your contribution to the size of your ecological footprint is and how you can reduce it? At the meeting, we will talk about topics that are important in terms of implementing the concept of sustainability and improving our environmental relations, and consider how we can improve our ecological footprint and reduce our ecological credit?

These are just some of the questions we will try to answer during the upcoming Science Café. If the fate of the world is important to you I invite you to join the discussion.

Those who feel like asking a question can send it by Friday 22 April 2022 to: oblicza.nauki@ug.edu.pl

You are cordially invited!
