SCIENCE CAFÉS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GDANSK

We would like to invite you to open meetings in the form of science cafés bringing the scientific activities of the University's staff to a wider audience.

The lecture "Is our future linked to the bottom of the oceans?" will be presented by Dr Ewa Szymczak, Department of Oceanography and Geography, University of Gdansk, Director of the Centre for Didactic Improvement and Tutoring UG

Abstract:

It has not been known for a long time that terrestrial mineral deposits are depleting. The number of people who want to live at a high level of civilisation and have access to the latest achievements and technologies is growing. All this is causing us to turn to the oceans as areas of valuable minerals.

We are already exploiting raw materials for energy, rock, chemicals. In the near future, the exploitation of iron-manganese concretions, polymetallic sulphide ores, cobalt-bearing rocks or methane hydrates is likely to begin.

Poland, as one of many countries, has been an active participant in the race for ocean resources for more than three decades.

What can we gain and what can we lose?

I will try to answer this and other questions during the lecture.
