Big Data, or a world in an ocean of data

The lecture 'Big Data, or the world in an ocean of data' will be presented by Dr Krzysztof Najman, Professor at the University of Gdansk, Department of Statistics, Faculty of Management, University of Gdansk.
Abstract:
When you wake up in the morning and look at your smartwatch screen to check what time it is, it is not at all your first activity that has been recorded on dozens of servers around the world....
Even when you sleep, your heart rate and blood oxygenation are recorded. The motion sensor will record any major change in sleep position. As soon as you get up, this fact will be recorded, the corresponding app will congratulate you on a successful night's sleep and the statistics on your daily rhythm will be updated. When you switch on the light early in the morning, start the coffee machine or the toaster to make toast, the spike in energy demand will be registered by many companies associated with energy production and distribution.
When you play music from a streaming service, the servers remember when and what you listen to. Your preferences will be updated and your playlists enhanced. At the same time, more information flows into your social media account. Your mailbox swells with emails. The day hasn't even started yet, and already a wealth of data has been created describing your every activity.
Even more data is generated by every modern enterprise. More and more activities are measured in detail, constantly monitored, and every activity is recorded in databases. Every enterprise strives to minimise costs, shorten the supply chain, optimise at every stage of its operations. It competes with many other companies. Data Driven Management needs data. Lots and lots of data and methods to extract information from it. It needs Big Data.
Data, data, more and more data. A lake, a sea, an ocean of data. Where does it come from? Who collects it and for what purpose? What can be done with them? Are they a boon or a threat to 21st century society? I will try to answer these and other questions during the lecture.
