SCIENCE CAFÉS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GDANSK

We would like to invite you to open meetings in the form of science cafés bringing the scientific activities of the University's staff to a wider audience.

Wednesday, 23 March 2022, 6.00 pm

The lecture 'A city of developers and a city of citizens - about the problems of urban space and whether art tells us how to solve them' will be presented by Katarzyna Szalewska, PhD, Professor UG, from the Department of Literary Theory and Artistic Criticism, Faculty of Philology, University of Gdańsk

Abstract:

Can a city be 'happy'? What are the characteristics of the metropolises we willingly visit as tourists? Does their space appear equally friendly from the perspective of their inhabitants? Should the shape of the cities in which we function every day be shaped by officials, developers or ordinary users? And finally - is it possible to negotiate between these points of view?

These are just some of the questions we will try to answer at the forthcoming Science Café. At the meeting, we will talk about topics that are important in the context of contemporary urban planning reflection. Among others, we will address the issues of gentrification, tourism, urban aesthetics or the question of transformations of public space.
