Rules for awarding ECTS credits at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdansk

Based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, the UG Chemistry Faculty assigns ECTS credits to individual courses. In accordance with the guidelines contained in the Ordinance of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of September 14,  2011 (Journal of Laws No. 201, item 1187), 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes, including the student's own work time.

ECTS credits are allocated to a course by expressing them in total numerical value. These credits are a relative measure of the student workload. The number of credits reflects the student workload required to complete the course. The workload includes both the student's work during classes organised at the university and their own work.

ECTS credits are awarded only for successful completion of the course, i.e. they are only awarded to students who have fulfilled the requirements for successful completion of the course. The number of credits is fixed in advance and is the same for all students passing the course. However, the grade a student receives for passing a subject expresses the quality of their work. Points are allocated to all subjects appearing in the approved study plan. The allocation of credits to individual courses takes into account the following assumptions:

• ECTS credits are allocated to individual forms of teaching, such as: lecture, auditorium exercises, laboratory classes, etc,
• the number of ECTS credits was differentiated by taking into account the amount of work the student has to do in order to complete the course, and was determined taking into account the number of hours of the course, the level of difficulty of the course, the status of the course (compulsory/ optional) and the experience of the persons preparing the course syllabus,
• first degree apprenticeship awarded 2 ECTS credits

A total of 30 ECTS credits are allocated to the subjects per semester. In order to complete a year of study, a student must obtain at least 60 credits (no less than 30 in each semester). A student completing a first degree programme must obtain 180 ECTS credits, while a student completing a second degree programme must obtain 120 ECTS credits. The rules for the award of ECTS credits apply to all full-time and part-time courses.

All classes specified in the study plans by form of study and the hours assigned to them are carried out as "contact" classes.

Studies conducted at the Faculty of Chemistry in all fields of study are in accordance with the Regulation of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education on the conditions for the conduct of studies (para. 5 para. 1 pt. 6-10), indicating the number of ECTS points that the student obtains by completing elective study modules. More than 30% of the ECTS credits in the study plans at the Faculty of Chemistry are allocated to elective courses.
