HISTORY

The Department of Bioinorganic Chemistry was separated from the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry and legally sanctioned by the Ordinance of the Rector of the University of Gdańsk No. 3/Z/2018 of 8 January 2018. The function of the head of the newly established unit was entrusted to Prof. Mariusz Makowski, who has held it until now.

RESEARCH AND SCIENTIFIC TOPICS

Within KChBN there is the Laboratory of Intermolecular Interactions, headed by Dr. hab. Agnieszka Chylewska, prof. UG. The research profile of the Laboratory is interdisciplinary, on the border of bioinorganic, coordinating, inorganic, analytical and organic chemistry. It is constantly improved thanks to the use of experimental and theoretical methods. The dynamic development of inorganic biological chemistry is aimed at searching for new solutions in the field of designing coordination compounds with metal ions with therapeutic and diagnostic potential and designing biomimetics. Scientific issues currently being developed under grants (OPUS 17, Miniatura, UGGrants) mainly concern: design of synthesis pathways, physicochemical profiling and cytotoxic and microbiological activity of sulfonamide antibiotic derivatives, metallopharmaceuticals and antibiotics; optimization of conditions for modifying elements of electrochemical equipment leading to the strengthening of parameters of selective sensors for pyrazine drugs and their metabolites; validation and verification of new analytical methods for drugs with pyrazine pharmacophore. The topics undertaken by the employees of KChBN are in line with current scientific trends, as evidenced by numerous achievements collected m. in in the form of scientific articles (since 2018 there are over 50 of them) and monographs published in journals from the JCR list.

APPARATUS

Due to the broad profile of the conducted research, KChBN is equipped with apparatus enabling synthesis, structural analysis and determination of bioinorganic profiles of synthesized compounds. In the laboratories we have, among others: microwave reactor, chromatograph for ultra-high performance UHPLC liquid chromatography, Helix apparatus for studying the interactions of biomolecules in real time, powder X-ray diffractometer XRD, FT-IR spectrometer, spectrofluorimeter, UV-Vis spectrophotometers and Autolab potentiostat, pH meters, conductivity meters and microtitrators.
