Profile of the Patron

Prof. Leszek Łankiewicz, PhD, was born on 13 August 1960 in Lębork, and died in 2003 in Gdańsk. He studied at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Technical University of Gdańsk (1979-1984), after which he began working at the Institute (now Faculty) of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1988, and his habilitation degree in 1998. In 2002 he was awarded the title of professor of chemical sciences. He has published several dozen papers, co-authored several patents and acted as supervisor in four doctoral theses.       

Professor Leszek Łankiewicz was not only an excellent scientist, but was also and above all a fantastic teacher and mentor to many young scientists. He infected them with enthusiasm for scientific work and showed its "human" face. He rejoiced in successes, even the smallest ones, and like no one else, he was able to motivate people to continue working. He himself was the best example of how to work, how to set goals and strive for them. He showed with his whole self how one can be a respected and valued scientist, a man of great knowledge, a professor, but at the same time remain open to the world around him.

Professor Leszek Łankiewicz, through his hard work, perseverance, enthusiasm, honesty and extraordinary kindness, set the bar high for his followers, but also marked out a path which is worth following and which should be followed in order to become a true Scientist, without forgetting to be simply Human. And this is the most important message to the laureates of his Award: be persistent in your pursuit of your goals, do not be afraid to ask questions and cross boundaries, acquire knowledge and be respected not only for what you know, but above all for what kind of people you are.
