ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 1st degree, full-time - 2023/26 edition
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 1st degree, full-time - education cycle 2023-2026
interdepartmental faculty
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
full-time first-cycle studies
General information
The interdepartmental course ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION is run jointly by three faculties of the University of Gdansk: Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Oceanography and Geography. Studies on this faculty are administered by the Faculty of Chemistry. The curriculum of the course of study in the field of ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION is fully compliant with the principles of the Polish Qualification Framework, as defined in the Act of 22 December 2015 on the Integrated Qualification System (Journal of Laws of 2016, item 64, as amended).
The Bachelor's degree programme lasts for three years and leads to a Bachelor's degree.
Undergraduate studies offer the opportunity to acquire knowledge in mathematics and physics, general biology, ecology, hydrobiology, toxicology, ecosystem functioning, nature conservation and conservation, general, analytical, inorganic and physical chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology. Numerous specialised subjects include: environmental chemistry (water, soil and atmosphere), instrumental analysis and monitoring, municipal and industrial waste issues, radiological protection, environmental impact assessment, environmental law, or environmental economics. The studies are strongly oriented towards the development of practical skills that are useful in later professional life. Hence the significant share of practical, laboratory and field classes in the training programme.
The graduate of the Bachelor of Science degree has advanced interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and competences in general and practical issues related to environmental protection. In particular, the graduate is prepared to analyse and evaluate the environmental effects of the most important processes occurring in nature, identify and solve basic problems related to environmental protection (resulting from the operation of the laws of nature, human activity, legal and economic aspects) and to act in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Achievement of the learning outcomes of the Bachelor's degree provides graduates with the opportunity to be employed in enterprises, organisations and institutions (public and non-governmental) interested in environmental protection problems, as well as to run their own businesses. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in second-cycle studies and postgraduate studies.
Organisation of the course of study
The studies are conducted in accordance with the study programme, developed by the Programme Council of the course ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION and approved by the UG Senate. Within the framework of the studies, students attend obligatory classes, as well as classes chosen by them from among the offered elective classes.
Each course is assigned a specific number of ECTS points. ECTS credits are a numerical value (from 1 to 60) allocated to each course, proportional to the student's workload in obtaining credit for the course. They reflect the work required for each course in relation to the total amount of work a student must do to complete an entire academic year. ECTS credits are allocated to all components of the degree programme, e.g. lectures, auditorium and laboratory classes, practical training, seminars, thesis, regardless of whether they are compulsory or elective (optional) courses. ECTS credits can also be obtained for work related to the student's preparation of specific reports or other studies, to his/her participation in research, as well as credits related to the student's independent study. Students are required to obtain 60 ECTS credits per year (30 credits in each semester) from compulsory and elective courses combined.
One of the prerequisites for graduation is the completion of a work placement provided for in the study plan.
Compulsory subjects (obligatory)
Compulsory courses are listed in the study plan, divided into lectures, exercises and practicals. The plan specifies the number of hours of each course, the form of credit (examination, credit for a grade, credit without a grade) and the number of ECTS credits allocated to the course.
Elective subjects (optional)
In the first year of the Bachelor's degree programme, all courses are compulsory; students take elective (optional) courses only from semester 4 (second year of study) onwards. Registration for optional courses is conducted electronically via the Student Portal in February-April of the preceding year. The prerequisite for the commencement of optional courses is the registration of a sufficient number of students (lecture min. 25, auditorium exercises min. 15, laboratory exercises min. 8 persons). If a class is not started, the student chooses another class that has the required number of participants.
In the sixth semester, students take optional classes from the offer of English-language elective courses for a minimum of 2 ECTS credits.
Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship completes the training process. The apprenticeship lasts no less than 3 weeks (120 hours) and is allocated 6 points. ECTS. In-service training takes place in the summer break after the 2nd year of studies, and is completed during the 3rd year of studies, which is recorded in the student's transcript with an appropriate entry. The traineeship can be carried out in economic units, public life institutions, scientific and research institutions or others.
Students are responsible for their own search for a placement institution. The student's independence in this respect should be regarded as an important element in the realisation of one of the fundamental objectives of the placement - preparation for going beyond the walls of the university and starting an independent professional activity. The student can find a placement either as a volunteer or as gainful employment.
Diploma classes
During the fourth semester, first-cycle students choose the organisational unit (Department, Faculty, Laboratory) in which they will realise the diploma course block (diploma seminar and diploma laboratory) in the sixth semester. The place of realisation of the diploma course block will be, respectively, the Faculty of Biology, the Faculty of Chemistry or the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography, depending on the student's choice and the organisational unit's affiliation to the structures of the faculties concerned. The choice of the organisational unit is made on the basis of information on the proposed scientific and research subjects posted at the time of the election on the homepage of the Faculty of Chemistry in the tab Graduate Students and the regulations for enrolment in the diploma course block (departments). The student informs the Dean of Students Office of his/her choice by sending the completed individual selection card to the Dean's Office. After completing a diploma block in a given unit, fulfilling all the requirements for its passing set out within a given unit and obtaining positive grades in all obligatory classes set out in the study programme, a student may take the diploma (bachelor's) examination. Undergraduate studies end with a diploma examination.
Additional information
The credit period in the course "ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION" is one semester.
After the first semester of study, both examination dates for the subject "General Chemistry" must be held during the regular examination session.
