Polish Qualifications Framework
GENERAL EDUCATION GOALS
In accordance with the Act of 23 June 2016 amending the act - Law on higher education and some other acts (Journal of Laws 2016, item 1311) and the Act of 22 December 2015 on the Integrated Qualification System (Journal of Laws 2016, item 64 and 1010) and the Ordinance of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 28 November 2018. on the characteristics of second-level learning outcomes for qualifications at levels 6-8 of the Polish Qualification Framework (Journal of Laws 2018, item 2218), persons who have commenced their studies at the Faculty of Chemistry must, in addition to a certain number of ECTS credits, acquire learning outcomes in accordance with the Polish Qualification Framework and the area of studied knowledge in order to complete a given level of education.

Graduate profile
CHEMISTRY
In CHEMISTRY education, the main aim is to equip graduates with knowledge, skills and competences in chemistry, based on the foundations of science and natural sciences (chemical sciences discipline). Studies in the field of CHEMISTRY are conducted within the framework of specializations appointed by the Council of the Faculty of Chemistry and approved by the Senate of the University of Gdańsk. Regardless of the type of specialization, graduates obtain the same directional learning outcomes, differing only in the substantive content of specialization, elective and diploma classes.
The graduate of the first degree programme has advanced knowledge, skills and competences in general and practical chemistry. In particular, the graduate is prepared to analyse, process and safely use chemical substances and to act in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Achievement of the learning outcomes of the first degree provides graduates with the opportunity to be employed in enterprises, organisations and institutions (public and non-governmental) whose activities are related to the use of chemistry in practice, as well as to run their own businesses. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in second degree and postgraduate studies.
Students at first degree level can choose an optional teacher education module. The module is continued in the second degree programme and comprises a total of 560 hours, which are allocated a total of 35 pts. ECTS (26 ECTS points in the first degree and 9 ECTS points in the second degree). It is pursued in parallel with field studies. The learning outcomes achieved as a result of the directional studies and the teacher education module are in accordance with the "Standards of education preparing for the teaching profession" specified in the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 25 July 2019(Journal of Laws 2019, item 1450).
The graduate of the second degree programme possesses in-depth knowledge, skills and competencies in specialised topics included in the chemical sciences. In particular, the graduate is prepared to independently solve chemical problems, conduct activities of a research nature and collect and critically analyse experimental data. Achievement of the learning outcomes of the second-degree studies provides graduates with the possibility of employment in enterprises and in public, non-governmental and research and scientific organisations and institutions whose activities are related to the use of chemistry. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in doctoral school and postgraduate studies.
A graduate who has completed the optional teacher training module is prepared to teach the subject of chemistry in all types of schools.
DIGITAL CHEMISTRY
Educating and training new generations of computational and theoretical chemists with a broad, practice-based knowledge is of paramount importance. Therefore, the Faculty of Chemistry University of Gdańsk introduces new master's specialization in "Digital chemistry". This two-year program is designed to give the students a solid base in quantum chemistry; molecular mechanics & dynamics, coarse-grain modelling; exploratory data analysis and machine learning algorithms; artificial intelligence for computer-aided drug design; numerical methods with algorithms for chemical and physical sciences, and programming in R and Python at an advanced level. The focus on "Digital Chemistry" is innovative not only in terms of content but also regarding the teaching concepts. At least two of the courses are strongly project-oriented, so that students will not only hear about theory/modelling methods but also use them in practice.
The graduate student of full-time second degree/master’s studies has in-depth knowledge, skills and competences in specialist matters of chemical sciences. In particular, the graduate is prepared to independently solve chemical problems, conduct research and collect and critically analyze experimental and computational data. The graduate has advanced specialist knowledge in basic branches of chemistry, modern cheminformatics techniques, computational methods in molecular quantum mechanics, theoretical and computational techniques in physics-based modeling and simulation. S/he knows the operating principles of scientific and research equipment used in chemistry. The graduate is able to use his/her knowledge to plan and perform chemical experiments of medium complexity using appropriate computational tools/methods. S/he is prepared to solve complex problems using innovative computational methods. S/he can formulate, and test hypotheses related to simple research problems in the field of digital chemistry. The graduate is prepared to manage teamwork, can interact with other people in the group and take a leading role in it. She/he keeps track of national and global scientific development in the field of chemistry thanks to the knowledge of professional literature. S/he communicates fluently in English at a B2+ level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Achieving the effects of learning outcomes of second-degree studies offers graduates the possibility of employment in enterprises as well as in public, non-governmental and research and development organizations and institutions whose activities are related to the application of chemistry (with particular emphasis on digital chemistry).
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
In the education of the interdisciplinary major in ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, the main objective is to equip the graduate with knowledge, skills and competencies in environmental protection, based on the foundations of science and natural sciences. The studies assume the implementation of learning outcomes in three disciplines: chemical sciences, biological sciences and earth and environmental sciences, of which chemical sciences is the leading discipline.
The graduate of the first degree programme has advanced interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and competences in general and practical environmental issues. In particular, the graduate is prepared to analyse and evaluate the environmental effects of the most important processes in nature, to identify and solve basic and more advanced problems related to environmental protection (resulting from the operation of the laws of nature, human activity, legal and economic aspects) and to act in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Achievement of the learning outcomes of the first-degree studies provides graduates with the opportunity to be employed in enterprises, organisations and institutions (public and non-governmental) interested in environmental protection problems, as well as to run their own businesses. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in second-cycle studies and postgraduate studies.
The graduate of the second degree programme possesses in-depth knowledge, skills and competences in the field of specialised issues related to environmental protection. In particular, the graduate is prepared to independently analyse assumed problems in the field of environmental protection, conduct research activities and collect and critically analyse data on the state of the environment from a variety of sources. Achievement of the learning outcomes of the second-cycle studies provides graduates with the possibility of employment in enterprises and in public, non-governmental and research and scientific organisations and institutions whose activities are related to environmental monitoring and protection. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in doctoral school and postgraduate studies.
CHEMICAL BUSINESS
The fields of science and scientific disciplines to which the learning outcomes of the CHEMICAL BUSINESS major relate are the areas of education in the sciences and natural sciences (chemical sciences discipline) and social sciences (economics and finance), of which the chemical sciences discipline is the leading discipline.
The aim of training in the interdisciplinary first degree programme in CHEMICAL BUSINESS is to equip the graduate with advanced knowledge in chemistry, applied chemistry, waste processing and small business economics, based on a thorough knowledge of mathematics, physics, basic technical drawing and laboratory work skills. This is an engineering degree programme and therefore the outcomes leading to knowledge, skills and competences in engineering are also implemented. The studies are intended to prepare candidates to set up and run small companies operating in the broadly defined chemical industry (production of cosmetics, detergents, plant protection agents, processing of selected groups of waste, production of galvanic coatings, etc.). Such an education also creates opportunities for graduates to be employed in production and service companies operating in the broadly defined applied chemistry. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in second-cycle studies and postgraduate studies.
The graduate of the 3-semester second-degree programme has in-depth knowledge, skills and competences in specialised topics included in the chemical sciences. In particular, the graduate is prepared to independently solve chemical problems, conduct activities of a research nature and collect and critically analyse experimental data. In addition to the knowledge of chemistry, the graduate will be a specialist in the economics and management of small and medium-sized enterprises, with particular emphasis on the chemical industry. The business elements of the education enable graduates not only to efficiently set up/run small companies operating in the field of applied chemistry, but also to take up managerial positions in companies. They will thus gain a significant advantage on the labour market over people with a typical education within the chemical sciences or economics, having competences from both the one and the other area of knowledge. Achievement of the learning outcomes of the second-degree studies provides graduates with the possibility of employment in enterprises and in public, non-governmental and research and scientific organisations and institutions whose activities are related to the use of chemistry. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in doctoral school and postgraduate studies.
At the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdansk, scientific and research activities are carried out in the fields and disciplines mentioned above, to which the learning outcomes of the interdisciplinary course CHEMICAL BUSINESS relate. The didactic classes at the engineering studies are based on the basic and applied research conducted in the units (a student is in contact with the latest research results).
