General information

The interdepartmental course ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION is run jointly by three faculties of the University of Gdansk: Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Oceanography and Geography. Studies on this faculty are administered by the Faculty of Chemistry. The curriculum of the course of study in the field of ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION is fully compliant with the principles of the Polish Qualification Framework, as defined in the Act of 22 December 2015 on the Integrated Qualification System (Journal of Laws of 2016, item 64, as amended).

Full-time, second-cycle studies last two years and end with the award of a Master's degree.

In the course of full-time studies of the second degree in the field of ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, students deepen their knowledge and skills in the broadly understood knowledge of the environment, mainly in the aspect of threats posed by the development of civilisation and counteracting these threats. The training programme is primarily oriented towards the development of students' practical skills, useful in their later professional life. Hence the high proportion of practical, mainly laboratory exercises in the curriculum. Graduates of full-time studies of the second degree have in-depth knowledge, skills and competences in the field of specialist issues related to environmental protection. In particular, the graduate is prepared to independently analyse complex environmental protection issues, conduct activities of a research nature and collect and critically analyse data on the state of the environment from a variety of sources. Achievement of the learning outcomes of the second-cycle studies provides graduates with the possibility of employment in enterprises and in public, non-governmental and research and scientific organisations and institutions whose activities are related to environmental monitoring and protection. Graduates are prepared to continue their education in doctoral school and postgraduate studies.

Organisation of the course of study

The studies are conducted in accordance with the study programme, developed by the Programme Council of the course ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION and approved by the UG Senate. Within the framework of the studies, students attend obligatory classes and classes chosen by them from among the offered elective classes (optional classes). Each course is assigned a specific number of ECTS points. ECTS credits are a numerical value (from 1 to 60) allocated to each course, proportional to the student's workload in obtaining credit for the course. They reflect the work required for each course in relation to the total amount of work a student must do to complete an entire academic year. ECTS credits are allocated to all components of the degree programme, e.g. lectures, auditorium and laboratory exercises, seminars, thesis, whether they are compulsory or elective (optional) courses. ECTS credits can also be obtained for work related to the student's preparation of specific reports or other studies, to his/her participation in research, as well as credits related to the student's independent study. Students are required to obtain 60 ECTS credits per year (30 credits in each semester) from compulsory and elective courses combined.

One of the prerequisites for graduation is the completion of a work placement provided for in the study plan.

Compulsory courses

Compulsory courses are listed in the study plan, divided into lectures, exercises and practicals. The plans specify the number of hours of each course, the form of credit (examination, credit for a grade, credit without a grade) and the number of ECTS credits allocated to the course.

Elective courses (optional)

During the implementation of semester 1 in November, first-year full-time second-cycle students electronically register via the Student Portal for elective (optional) classes they will attend in semester 2. Registration for optional classes for semester 3 is conducted electronically in February-April of the preceding year. The prerequisite for the commencement of optional classes is the enrolment of a sufficient number of students (lecture min. 25, auditorium exercises min. 15, laboratory exercises min. 8 persons). If a class is not started, the student who chose it chooses another class that has the required number of participants.

In the third semester, students take optional classes from the offer of English-language elective courses for a minimum of 4 ECTS credits.

Apprenticeships

In the case of full-time second-cycle studies, students undertake a compulsory work placement after the first year of study, during the summer break. The in-service training lasts a minimum of two weeks (80 hours), its labour intensity corresponds to 4 ECTS credits. The internship is completed during the second year of studies and is recorded in the student's transcript.

Students are responsible for finding an institution for their placement. The student's independence in this respect should be regarded as an important element in the realisation of one of the fundamental objectives of the placement - preparation for going beyond the walls of the university and starting an independent professional activity. The student can find a placement either as a volunteer or as gainful employment.

Diploma courses

Full-time second-cycle students, immediately after enrolment, choose the organisational unit (Department, Department, Laboratory) where they will carry out their master's thesis and, at the same time, a block of classes related to it (seminar, specialisation laboratory, master's seminar and master's laboratory). The place where the thesis block will be realised will be the Faculty of Biology, the Faculty of Chemistry or the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography, depending on the choice of the Department/Department/Lab. The choice of organisational unit is made on the basis of information on the proposed scientific and research topic posted at the time of the election on the homepage of the Faculty of Chemistry in the Diploma tab. The student informs the Dean's Office for Student Affairs of his or her choice by sending a completed individual selection card to the Dean's Office. As part of the M.Sc. lab and M.Sc. seminar, the student prepares an M.Sc. thesis, which is then evaluated by a thesis supervisor and a reviewer. Second-cycle studies end with a master's exam.
